The Victoria Inn or Beerhouse, Church Road, Low Common, Deopham was owned by William Gathergood from 1871 to 1903.
William Gathergood was also a farmer with some 7 Acres of land (ref. 1881 census ).
William (born 1842) married Maria Armstrong (born between 1831/2 in Hingham).
Maria died 11th July 1903 (See Deopham Church headstone details).
The Victoria Inn was sold by auction on Friday 25th September 1903.
The Lot 1 comprised :-
A freehold Inn including Parlour, Bar, Cellar, 4 Bedrooms, Clay & Tile Lean-to including Kitchen, Large Club Room and a Dairy, plus approximately 2 acres of land. Lots 2 & 3 sold on the same day were two plots of land of approximately 2 acres each.
Lot 1 (The Inn etc) was purchased by Bullards (Brewery ?) and in a letter dated 26th September 1903 it is stated that the proceeds from the sale would go towards settlement of Mr. Gathergood's debts (To Bullards).
What happened to William Gathergood? He disposed of all of his property a very short time after his wife Maria died (less than 3 months).
According to letters William then moved into a small cottage near to the Victoria Inn. His death is recorded as being between April and June 1916. He does not appear to be buried with Maria.
The Inn closed in 1974 and reopened in 1985.
The Inn is still in business with a Mr. Paul Berry as the licensee in February 2003
I understand from Phil Long - Deopham Historian - that the Licensee has recently changed (July 2005)
